DELVAL NARROWLY MISSES EAST REGIONAL TITLE; FIVE WRESTLERS ADVANCE TO NCAAs

GETTYSBURG (PA) – Delaware Valley College qualified five wrestlers for the NCAA Division III Championships, including champions Charlie Frankel (125 pounds) and Aaron Karns (197 pounds), as the Aggies finished half a point shy of the team title at the NCAA East Regional Championships hosted by Gettysburg College.

In addition to Frankel and Karns, teammates Dale Fava, Emmanuel Ajagbe and Dallas Winston will head to Iowa for nationals in two weeks. Fava, a senior, was the 141-pound runner-up while Ajagbe, a senior, and Winston, a freshman, took third at 149 and 174 pounds respectively. Delaware Valley also had a sixth placewinner at the East Regionals as sophomore heavyweight Mike Boardman took fifth.

The Aggies, who entered the regionals ranked eighth in Division III, racked up 108 points, just behind sixth-ranked Centenary College's 108.5 points. Seventh-ranked Wilkes University was third with 106.5 points while No. 17 New York University (86 pts) and No. 23 Ursinus (68.5 pts) rounded out the top five in the 17-team field.

Frankel won the title at a NCAA qualifying tournament for the second year in a row as he was a Metropolitan Conference champion last year and rode that to an eighth-place finish and All-America honors. This season, he was the second seed in his weight class and had a bye in the opening round before pinning seventh-seeded Anthony Geiger of Stevens in 86 seconds of their quarterfinal match.

Frankel followed with a 3-2 triumph over third-seeded Jaydon Rice of Hunter in the semifinals to reach to reach the finals and secure an NCAA berth. He took on fifth-seeded Chris Donaldson of Ursinus, who upset the top seed and second-ranked wrestler in the other semifinal match-up. Donaldson defeated Frankel earlier in the year and the two went toe-to-toe once again. It was tied at 4-4 after seven minutes of regulation (thanks to a late reversal by Frankel) and overtime. In the tiebreakers, Frankel escaped Donaldson when he was in the down position and then rode him on top for the next 30-second period for the 5-4 triumph and the East Regional crown. He will take a 16-6 record to the NCAAs.

Karns, ranked third in Division III in his weight class, will also make his second trip to the NCAAs as he was a wild-card selection in the old qualifying format in 2011. He returned to Delaware Valley this season after a one-year hiatus and was seeded first in the 16-man bracket.

Karns pinned his first three opponents to reach the finals. He opened by dropping Evan Johnson of Johns Hopkins with 11 seconds remaining (6:41) and followed with an 82-second pin of Marshall Puls of Gettysburg in the quarterfinals. He then pinned fourth-seeded Tyler Russell of Merchant Marine in 1:55. Karns was then awarded a victory in the finals when third-seeded Musa Dereese of Hunter could not wrestle due to an injury suffered in his semifinal win. The four triumphs upped Karns' record to 29-3.

Fava was a national qualifier as a freshman in 2009 and returned to the team at semester break after a year and a half away from the sport. He was seeded third out of 16 wrestlers in his bracket and notched pins in his first two matches to reach the semifinals. Fava dropped Chayoot Chengsupanimit of Muhlenberg in 75 seconds and followed with a pin over sixth-seeded DeMarques Holley of King's in 4:06. He then needed just 28 seconds to drop Chris Gogatz (Hunter), who upset the number two and seven seeds in his first two matches, to reach the finals.

In the finals, Fava battled top-seeded and ninth-ranked Paul Marcello of Johns Hopkins. Each notched escapes and the two entered overtime deadlocked at 1-1. Marcello then registered a takedown for the 3-1 victory. Despite the loss, Fava will head back to the national stage with an 8-5 record.

Ajagbe, who was ranked number one in the country earlier in the year, entered the regional tournament ranked third in the country and seeded second in his weight class. Ajagbe's quest for a return to the NCAA Championships for the first time since his rookie campaign of 2010 began with a pair of shutouts as he earned an 11-0 major decision over Matt Howell of Washington & Lee and a 5-0 blanking of seventh-seeded Curtis Watkins of Ursinus.

Ajagbe faced third-seeded Michael Polizzi of Stevens in the semifinals and dropped a 3-1 overtime decision to the eventual champion. He bounced back with a 3-2 triumph over seventh-seeded Curtis Watkins to reach the consolation finals. The match went to overtime and, with the NCAA bid, on the line, Ajagbe got an escape in the 30-second tiebreaker and rode Watkins for the next 30-second period for the 4-3 win. It was his 31st victory in 34 matches this season.

Winston was seeded fifth in his weight class and opened with a 10-0 major decision over Anthony Clifford of King's before falling to fourth-seeded Zach Zotollo of College of New Jersey, 3-1, in the quarterfinals.

Needing four wins in the consolation bracket to reach the NCAA Championships, the rookie did just that. He began with a 14-1 major over Luke Pragdatt (Hunter) and followed with 8-4 decision over Zachary Bass (Stevens). Winston then earned a 4-0 blanking of sixth-seeded Mike Williams of Ursinus to reach the consolation finals against top-seeded and third-ranked Kevin Dufresne of Centenary. Dufresne had a 10-1 major over Winston just 16 days ago, but this time it was Winston with his arm raised in a 3-2 triumph that upped his season mark to 22-12.

Boardman picked up the fifth seed for his 16-man bracket. He began his regional run with a 4-2 decision over Grant Cokeley of Washington & Lee and reached the semifinals with a 9-4 triumph over fourth-seeded William Fletcher of Wilkes. Boardman then ran against top-seeded and second-ranked Joseph Zitone of Centenary and dropped a 10-4 decision. He was then pinned by Kevin Poplaski of Gettysburg to fall into the fifth-sixth place match against unseeded Anthony Chu of NYU. Boardman ended his season on a high note and with a 17-12 record thanks to an early first-period pin of Chu.

Freshmen Pat Davis (133), James Dugan (157) and Nick Della Fera (165) as well as sophomore Connor Gabriel (184) competed at the East Regional but did not place in their respective weight classes.

Davis was seeded eighth and opened the tournament by pinning Kenny Albert of Hunter in 2:27. He fell into the consolation bracket after an 8-3 loss to top-seeded Brandon Jones of NYU, but bounced back with a 7-0 shutout of Marius Kola (Mt. St. Vincent). Davis' run came to end with a 5-3 overtime loss to fifth-seeded Ray Yagloski of Johns Hopkins in the third round of consolation. Davis went 13-15 for the year.

Dugan was also an eighth seeded in his bracket and he notched a first-round pin (4:53) over Gabriel Gleason of NYU. Top-seeded and second-ranked Chris Burdge pinned Dugan in the quarterfinals, but Dugan responded with a second-period pin of Ryan Giovanetti (Scranton) in the second round of consolations. Dugan then dropped a 9-5 decision to fifth-seeded Logan Yox of McDaniel to end his year with a 23-17 record.

Della Fera was a number eight seed in his weight class and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 blanking of Shawn Flesche (Scranton). He suffered a 13-2 loss to top-seeded and third-ranked Joey Favia of Stevens, but stayed alive with a 9-3 decision over seventh-seeded Christian Ostrowski of Johns Hopkins. Della Fera then fell 7-3 to number five seed Tommy Desir of King's in the consolation third round to wrap up a rookie year that saw him go 21-18.

Gabriel was unseeded and dropped his opening match with a 6-3 decision to eighth-seeded Dennis Melendez. He pinned Nick Giancaspro (Mt. St. Vincent) to open the consolation bracket, but fell 3-2 to Khalid Shakir of Centenary in the second round to end his season with a 13-12 record.
