AGGIES DROP 25-15 DECISION AT NO. 6 CENTENARY

HACKETTSTOWN (NJ) – Centenary College picked up bonus points in four weight classes as the sixth-ranked Cyclones notched a 25-15 home triumph over No. 8 Delaware Valley College.

Both teams were victorious in five weight classes, but the difference was three pins and a major decision for the Cyclones, who improved to 9-3 in dual meets. The Aggies fell to 8-3.

Delaware Valley picked up three points in the 125-pound bout as returning All-American Charlie Frankel notched a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second for a 3-0 triumph over Erick Orellana (9-8). It was Frankel's 12th win in 18 matches this season.

The Cyclones answered at 133 as Zach Huxford (9-5) led throughout and then earned a pin over Pat Davis (11-12) in 5:54 for a 6-3 Centenary advantage.

However, Dale Fava (4-4) tied the match up at 141 as the senior notched a takedown with six seconds remaining to turn a 2-1 deficit into a big, 3-2 triumph over ninth-ranked Corey Vernon (14-5).

Emmanuel Ajage then followed with a reversal, a three-point near-fall and riding time for a 6-1 decision over Craig Montgomery (15-7) at 149 pounds. Ajagbe, ranked third in Division III in his weight class, upped his mark to 26-2. It was also his 89th career victory, tying him with Warren Robertson '81 for 14th place on the school's all-time list.

However, Centenary sent out nationally-ranked wrestlers onto the mat for the next three weight classes and they racked up a combined 13 points for a 19-9 lead. At 157, second-ranked Chris Burdge (19-1) dropped James Dugan (20-15) with 22 seconds remaining in the first period (2:38). Ninth-ranked Owen Vernon (16-4) followed with a 6-0 victory over Nick Della Fera (19-15) at 165. Kevin Dufresne, 15-1 and ranked third at 174 pounds, added a 10-1 major decision over Dallas Winston (17-10).

Connor Gabriel (12-9) kept the Aggies alive as he used an escape in the third period to send his 184-pound match to overtime. He then recorded a takedown late in the second extra session for a 3-1 decision over Khalid Shakir (8-13).

Aaron Karns, who just moved up a spot to third in the national rankings at 197 pounds, trailed 1-0 going into the third period before registering four points for the decision. The victory improved Karns to 24-3 on the year and it made a 19-15 match heading into the final weight class.

However, J.D. Zitone (18-1), ranked second nationally at heavyweight, sealed the win for the Cyclones as he pinned Mike Boardman (13-10) in 71 seconds for the 25-15 finals.

Delaware Valley will get right back on the mat Friday evening when it hosts 16th-ranked The College of New Jersey for Senior Night.
