COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – Delaware Valley College heavyweight
Mike Boardman went 3-0, including a pair of match-clinching victories, as the 30th-ranked Aggies downed two squads ranked ahead them and swept four matches overall at the North/South Duals.
Delaware Valley opened Saturday with a 33-9 triumph over Rhode Island College. The Aggies led from start to finish in a 26-15 victory over No. 22 Messiah College and then rallied with wins in the last two weight classes for a 21-19 triumph over No. 29 Wesleyan University. Delaware Valley then capped the day by edging host Ursinus College, 16-15.
The 4-0 mark at the Duals (the first dual meet matches of the season for the Aggies), combined with last weekend's third-place showing at the highly competitive Citrus Invitational (Delaware Valley finished ahead of a group of Division II and Division III ranked teams), should result in the Aggies moving up in the next Division III coaches' poll which is scheduled to be released on Monday.
Boardman was one of five Delaware Valley grapplers that were undefeated at the Duals. He opened with a pin in just 49 seconds and then sat out the Messiah match. When Boardman hit the mat against Wesleyan's Austin Frank, the Aggies were down 19-18, but he pulled out a 4-3 triumph to seal the win. In the Ursinus match, Delaware Valley trailed 15-13 before Boardman's 6-1 decision over Robert Scarmazza gave the squad the one-point win. Boardman is now 10-6 on the year
Nationally-ranked wrestlers
Emmanuel Ajagbe and
Aaron Karns went 4-0 at 149 and 197 pounds respectively while
Nick Della Fera was perfect in his four matches at 165.
David Davidson was also undefeated as he won both of his battles at 133.
Ajagbe, ranked fourth in Division III, improved to 20-1 on the season with his lone loss coming against a Division II All-American in the finals of the East Stroudsburg Open. He was coming off a victory over the top-ranked wrestler in his weight class, en route to the title at the Citrus Invitational. The senior could move all the way to number one in Monday's poll.
Karns, ranked fifth in his weight class, upped his mark to 18-2 on the year while Della Fera improved to 17-10. Davidson's two victories increased his total to 12 against just four losses.
Delaware Valley trailed 9-7 against Rhode Island, but took the final five weights with three pins (
Dallas Winston at 174, Karns and Boardman) and two major decisions (Della Fera and
Kyle Tufts at 184) for the big win.
The Aggies then continued their dominance over Messiah as they defeated the Falcons for the 21st time in 22 career meetings. They led 22-4 after the first six weight classes, including falls by returning All-American
Charlie Frankel at 125 pounds and
James Dugan at 157, and cruised from there.
The Wesleyan match saw Dugan pick up another fall while Ajagbe, Della Fera and
Connor Kirkegard (125) had decisions, but Delaware Valley was down five with two weights to go. Karns gave the Aggies a chance with an 11-1 major decision over Joshua Roomateau and Boardman followed with his one-point decision for the win.
Delaware Valley and Ursinus each won five weight classes in their battle, but the difference was the one bonus point that Ajagbe picked up with his 12-1 major decision over Curtis Watkins. That gave the Aggies a 7-6 lead at the time but they trailed by five again heading into the last two weights. Karns picked up an 8-2 decision and Boardman followed with his 6-1 decision to cap the 4-0 showing for Delaware Valley.
