YORK (PA) – Third-ranked
Emmanuel Ajagbe took top honors in the 149-pound weight class to highlight Delaware Valley College's showing at the New Standard Corporation Invitational hosted by York College.
The Aggies finished seventh in the 13-team field with 52 points. Eighth-ranked Ithaca College captured the team title with 86 points while No. 21 The College of New Jersey and the 20th-ranked host Spartans followed with 66.5 and 66 points respectively.
Ajagbe ran his record to 12-1 and notched his second individual title of the year as he went a perfect 4-0 on Saturday. The senior reached the semifinals with a 13-2 major decision over Brock Thompson of Division II Millersville and a 15-3 major over Jordan Halter of Elizabethtown. He then registered a 6-1 triumph over Kevin Collins of Ithaca and completed the day with a 10-4 decision over Henry Stauber of Johns Hopkins. Earlier this season, Ajagbe captured the Ursinus Fall Brawl title and was the runner-up at the East Stroudsburg Open.
Freshman
Dallas Winston placed in the top four for the second straight invitational as he went 3-1 and took third in the 174-pound bracket. Winston, who was fourth at the East Stroudsburg Open, opened with a 4-2 decision over Clayton Neivet of Brockport State and followed with a 10-0 blanking of Sean Prell of Johnson & Wales. In the semifinals, Winston was pinned by the second-ranked Division III wrestler in the weight class in Jules Doliscar of Ithaca. He was then awarded a medical forfeit victory in the consolation finals. Winston is now 8-3 on the year.
Connor Kirkegard (125),
David Davidson (133) and
Nick Della Fera (174) had strong showings in their respective weight classes as they were each still alive in the consolation bracket when the invitational came to an end (due to time constraints, the consolation finals in each weight class featured the two wrestlers that lost their semifinal matches).
Kirkegard and Davidson each reached the quarterfinals before falling to nationally-ranked wrestlers who eventually won their weight classes. Kirkegard went 2-1 on the day with his lone setback being a 2-0 decision to top-ranked Paul Bewak of Johns Hopkins. Davidson won three of his four matches with his loss coming against seventh-ranked Nathaniel Gregorio of the Coast Guard Aacademy. Della Ferra went 1-1 in the championship bracket and then won his next three bouts in consolations.
