DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Sophomore All-American forward Meghan Nowak scored all 15 of her points in the second half as Eastern University notched a 68-65 victory over host Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game.
Nowak missed all five of her shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes, but her teammates sank six treys, en route to a 29-27 halftime advantage. She then went 6-for-13 in the second half and also hit all three of her free throw attempts. Nowak also added 16 rebounds on the afternoon.
The Aggies (1-4, 0-2 Freedom) opened the second half by scoring five of the first seven points, including a 3-pointer by freshman Eireann Anastasti that gave them a one-point lead. However, Gina DiDomenico opened an 8-0 spurt by draining a trey of her own and Eastern (3-3, 2-0 Freedom) never trailed again.
Delaware Valley pulled to within two points on three different occasions in the opening 12 minutes of the second stanza, but the Eagles had an answer each time. The last saw them respond with a 6-0 spurt to take a 58-50 lead. The advantage was still at seven just under the four-minute mark when an
Emily Soper jumper and a layup by
Agatha Drozd brought the Aggies to within three, 61-58 with 50 seconds to go.
DiDomenico made it a two-possession game by sinking two free throws, but Anastasi answered with a long 3-pointer to make it 63-61 with 32 seconds remaining. Eastern's Kaleigh Boreman was fouled and she hit a pair to make it a four-point game. Anastasi missed a trey and DiDomenico was fouled with 13 seconds left. She hit one of two from the line and Anastasi then kept Delaware Valley alive with another 3-pointer to make it 66-64 with nine seconds left.
Kaitlyn Dougherty hit one of the foul shots three seconds later and Eastern elected to foul Anastasi and put her on the line. She hit the first three throw and intentionally missed the second in hopes of a rebound and then a tying-basket. However, the Aggies were called for a lane violation and Dougherty hit a free throw for the three-point win.
DiDomenico finished with 18 points and six assists to pace Eastern. Dougherty had 13 points and six boards while Reilly Gavitt hit double digits with 10 points.
Anastasi and Soper tallied 18 points apiece for Delaware Valley. Soper also added 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Drozd finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists while
Brenna Coll had four points, 12 rebounds and four assists.
