EAST STROUDSBURG (PA) – Delaware Valley College had three wrestlers place in the top six as the Aggies competed at the 46th annual East Stroudsburg University Open. Team scoring was not held at the event, which featured wrestlers from all levels of collegiate competition.
Senior
Emmanuel Ajagbe, who last week claimed the 149-pound title at the Ursinus College Fall Brawl, reached the finals on Saturday thanks to four straight wins, including triumphs over a pair of Division I wrestlers and one Division II competitor. Ajagbe, who is ranked sixth in Division III in his weight class, took on Gus Sako, an unattached wrestler from Division I University of Virginia, and dropped a hard-fought 3-0 decision. Ajagbe is 8-1 on the young season.
Freshman
Dallas Winston hit the mats for the first time in his collegiate career and the 174-pounder finished in fourth place with a 5-2 mark. He opened with a 17-1 technical fall victory and a 13-0 major decision before registering a pair of 5-3 triumphs over higher division wrestlers (one Division I, one Division II) to advance to the semifinals. Winston battled Jim Resnick, an unattached wrestler from Division I Rider University, and was edged 1-0 by the eventual tournament champion. Winston bounced back by registering a pin in exactly a minute before dropping a decision in the consolation finals.
Fellow rookie
James Dugan dropped his opening match to a 165-pound competitor from Division I Penn State University, but he rallied with five consecutive victories (two over Division I wrestlers and two over Division II wrestlers) in the consolation bracket. He fell in the consolation semifinals to an unattached wrestler from Division I Lehigh University and is listed as a fifth/sixth place finisher as those matches did not take place in any weight class due to time constraints. Dugan is 8-4 on the year.
Delaware Valley will next compete at the York College Invitational on Saturday, December 1.
