COLLEGEVILLE (PA) – Delaware Valley College's first showing at the North/South Duals was a perfect one as the Aggies went 4-0 with triumphs over the United States Coast Guard Academy (36-12), 19th-ranked Messiah College (18-15), Oneonta State College (23-12) and Trinity College of Connecticut (39-9). The event took place at nearby Ursinus College.
Delaware Valley, which had not hit the mats since December 18, went over the .500 mark for the first time this season as it improved to 7-6 in dual meets. The Aggies will now have nearly two week to prepare for a home meeting with defending Metropolitan Conference champion and 25th-ranked Centenary College on Friday, January 20 (7:00 p.m.).
Delaware Valley opened the day by winning seven of 10 weight classes against Coast Guard, including bonus points in six of them with three pins, a forfeit, a technical fall and a major decision. The major came from
Charlie Frankel as he knocked off the sixth-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, Nate Giorgio, with a 12-4 final. It was the start of a 4-0 day for Frankel as he notched a forfeit, technical fall, major decision and decision and improved his record to 13-6 on the year.
Eric McCann and
James DeLillo followed with a forfeit and fall at 133 and 141 pounds respectively.
Zak Andrews, ranked third nationally at 149, hit the mat and pinned his opponent in 2:04 for the first of four wins on the day. It was also the All-American's 100th career triumph, making him just the 11th wrestler in the storied history of the Aggie program to reach that milestone.
Nationally-ranked
Emmanuel Ajagbe (seventh at 157 pounds) recorded a technical fall to make it 27-0. Conner Gabriel's pin at 174 and
Zeke Pyle's decision at heavyweight comprised the final nine points for the Aggies.
Next up was former Middle Atlantic Conference rival Messiah College. The Aggies had won 19 of 20 previous meetings against the Falcons, but Messiah had high hopes with their national ranking.
The Aggies led 15-3 halfway through as it won four of the first five weights with decisions by Frankel, Andrews and Ajagbe and an injury default triumph by Henry Stinson at 141 (Stinson was winning 9-1 at the time). Messiah too the next four – all by decision – to tie it up at 15-15 and leaving it all up to the heavyweights.
Delaware Valley's
Cody Gardner, ranked ninth nationally, had little trouble with Evan Canady and earned a 6-1 decision for the 18-15 team victory. It was Gardner's lone match of the day but it was all the Aggies would need from the junior.
The Oneonta State match saw Delaware Valley dominate the early weights again as a technical fall by Frankel, a decision by McCann, a technical fall by Stinson and a decision by Andrews made it a 16-0 score. Oneonta did take four of the next six weights with decisions in all four, but Delaware Valley added to its score with a decision by
Donald Smith at 165 and a major decision by
Kyle Tufts at 184.
Delaware Valley ended the perfect day by taking eight of 10 weights against Trinity, including two falls, two forfeits, a technical fall, a major decision and two decisions. Andrews and Tufts had the pins while
John Giusti (157) recorded the technical fall. Frankel (forfeit), McCann (major decision), DeLillo (forfeit),
Alec Horan (decision at 165) and
Matt Damato (decision at 174) picked up the remaining victories.
