DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College picked up bonus points in nine of the 10 weight classes as the 23rd-ranked Aggies notched a 51-0 blanking over visiting McDaniel College.
The win moved Delaware Valley, which was coming off a tough one-point loss at No. 30 The College of New Jersey last night, back to the .500 mark at 8-8. The Green Terror fell to 3-8.
The Aggies racked up three pins, three major decisions and a decision, and they were also awarded three forfeit victories. They never trailed in any of the seven matches that took place and they were tied just once.
The tie was at 197 pounds as Delaware Valley's
Chris James and McDaniel's Mike Meekins were even at 2-2 heading into the third period. James, a senior who joined the team for the first time this year following a standout football career as a linebacker, took the down position for the third period and escaped with 1:04 remaining for a 3-2 lead. It stayed that way until James was able to secure a takedown with 15 ticks to go. Meekins escaped in the closing seconds, but it wasn't enough as James picked up the 5-3 decision to improve to 3-3 on the year.
Charlie Frankel started the evening at 125 pounds and he pinned Drew Brehm in just 78 seconds to improve to 15-7 on the year. The remaining pins came from
James DeLillo and
Kyle Tufts at 141 and 184 pounds respectively. DeLillo (14-10) stopped Tim Gainsborg in 70 seconds while Tufts (10-9) need just 2:01 to drop Sean Crimmons.
Eric McCann (133),
Emmanuel Ajagbe (157) and
Donald Smith (165) earned the major decisions in the match. McCann moved his record to 15-7 with a 12-3 victory over Sean Ensign. Ajagbe, ranked fifth in Division III in his weight class, racked up a 10-1 triumph over Josh Moore for his 13th win in 16 tries. Smith followed with a 12-2 major over Torin Lehmann to improve his mark to 14-11.
Zak Andrews (149),
Connor Gabriel (174) and
Zeke Pyle (heavyweight) were awarded victories by forfeit. For Andrews (20-2), a returning All-American who is ranked second in Division III this season, it was his 106th career win, tying the senior with 1991 graduate Mark Ambrose for seventh place on the Delaware Valley all-time list.
