23RD-RANKED AGGIES DROP 20-19 DECISION AT NO. 30 TCNJ

EWING (NJ) – In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, No. 30 The College of New Jersey won four of the final six weight classes to edge 23rd-ranked Delaware Valley College, 20-19.

The Lions improved to 8-4 with the home victory while the Aggies dropped their second straight dual-meet match and fell to 7-8.

Zak Andrews gave Delaware Valley a 10-7 advantage as Division III second-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds needed just 80 seconds to pin Josh Garzio. The win improved Andrews to 19-2 (11 pins) on the season and also moved him into a tie with 2001 graduate Mike Margelis for eighth place on the school's all-time victory list (105).

TCNJ took command from there with three straight decisions for a 16-10 advantage. John Darling began that run with an 11-5 upset over fifth-ranked Emmanuel Ajagbe at 157. KC Murphy followed with a 5-0 shutout over Donald Smith at 165 pounds, and Omar Akel picked up an 11-5 triumph over Connor Gabriel at 174.

Delaware Valley cut its deficit in half at 184 as Kyle Tufts picked up a 4-1 decision over Nathaniel Leer. However, TCNJ sealed the match as Mike Denver, who is the top-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, moved up to 197 and notched a 13-2 major decision over Chris James for a 20-13 team score. Delaware Valley's Mike Boardman was awarded a forfeit victory at heavyweight for the 20-19 final.

Charlie Frankel came out strong and picked up four team points for Delaware Valley as he earned a 15-3 major decision over Joey DiCarlo at 125 pounds. The Lions followed with wins at 133 and 141 pounds for a 7-4 lead as PJ Schmidt notched a 5-3 decision over David Davidson and Dan Herr had a 12-2 major decision over James DeLillo. Andrews regained the advantage for Delaware Valley, but that was short-lived as TCNJ went on to the narrow victory.

The Aggies return to action in less than 24 hours as they host McDaniel College on Thursday (7:00 p.m.).
