DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Centenary College captured six of the 10 weight classes, including two by fall, as the visiting Cyclones defeated 20th-ranked Delaware Valley College, 24-13.
Centenary, the defending Metropolitan Conference champions who were nationally-ranked earlier in the season, improved to 3-5 in dual meets. The Aggies saw their mark fall to 7-7.
Centenary opened with wins in two of the opening three weights, including a pin, to take a 9-3 lead. Chris Parker gave the Cyclones the early advantage by dropping
Charlie Frankel with 12 seconds left in the first period (2:48) at 125 pounds. The teams then split decisions as Delaware Valley's
David Davidson earned a 4-1 triumph over Adam Swift at 133, and Centenary's Craig Montgomery notched a 10-3 victory over Henry Stinson at 141.
Returning All-American
Zak Andrews hit the mat next for the Aggies and the third-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds notched four takedowns and a reversal, en route to a 13-5 major decision over Joe Batolini. It was the 104th career win for Andrews, moving the senior into a tie for ninth place on the school's all-time list. The win pulled Delaware Valley to within two, 9-7.
That brought up a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers at 157 pounds in the Aggies'
Emmanuel Ajagbe (sixth) and Centenary's Chris Burdge (fourth). The match was tied at 2-2 in the second period when Burdge registered a takedown 28 seconds in. Ajagbe escaped and entered the third period down a point. Burdge notched an escape for a two-point lead then added a takedown in the final seconds for a 7-3 decision and a 12-7 Cyclone advantage at the halfway point of the evening.
Centenary upped its lead to 21-7 with a pin and a decision in the next two weights. At 165, Nick Bach held a 6-1 lead before pinning
Donald Smith with 16 seconds left (6:44). Khalis Shakir then followed with a 5-1 victory over
Connor Gabriel at 174.
Delaware Valley stopped the run at 184 pounds as
Joseph Richard registered a 13-7 decision over Joe Acosta. It was tied at 7-7 before Richard earned a takedown with 12 seconds to go. He was close to picking up the pin and getting the Aggies back in the match, but the buzzer sounded and he had to settle for the decision and a 21-10 team score.
Kyle Tufts picked up another three points for Delaware Valley at 197 as he defeated James Valcius by a 6-3 decision. However, giving up only a decision ensured the win for the Cyclones.
There was still drama at heavyweight as Delaware Valley
Cody Gardner (5-0, ranked 10th) and J.D. Zitone (18-0, ranked fourth) battled to keep their undefeated records intact. Each wrestler picked up an escape point before Zitone hit a takedown with 48 seconds to left in the third. Gardner escaped with 22 ticks remaining but Zitone held on for the 3-2 win and the 24-13 team final.
