CORTLAND EDGES DELVAL, 19-18, IN BATTLE OF TOP 30 TEAMS

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Jonathan Conroy's pin in the next to last weight class of the evening lifted No. 27 SUNY Cortland to a 19-18 road victory over 23rd-ranked Delaware Valley College.

The win improved the Red Dragons to 12-4-1 on the season while the Aggies saw their record drop to 6-7-1. All seven losses and the one tie for Delaware Valley has come against teams ranked in the top 30.

The Aggies took a 15-13 advantage with just two bouts to go after top-ranked and returning All-American Jesse Harrington used a third period takedown to earn a 3-2 decision over Troy Sterling at 157 pounds.

Conroy hit the mat against Delaware Valley's Mike Chiappetta at 165 and took an early 4-1 advantage. Chiappetta earned a reversal to make it 4-3, but Conroy quickly had a reversal of his own and turned it into a pin with 36 seconds left in the first period. The six points gave Cortland a 19-15 lead and forcing the Aggies to get either a major decision (win by 8-14 points) to tie or a technical fall (win by 15 points) or a pin at 174 pounds to win the match

Returning national qualifier Dan Daddino went out for just the second time this season for Delaware Valley and he led 3-1 before James Ondris tied it up near the end of the first period. Daddino had an escape for the lone point of the second while Ondris matched it in the third. Daddino picked up the 5-4 decision thanks to more than a minute of riding time, but the Aggies fell short by one in the team score.

Cortland opened the evening with three straight decisions for a 9-0 lead. Will Parks used a takedown 30 seconds into the third period to post a 3-2 decision over Jake Phillips at 184, while a second-period takedown was the difference in fifth-ranked Jared Myhrberg's 3-2 victory over Aaron Karns at 197 pounds. Corey James, ranked seventh at heavyweight, followed with a 5-2 triumph over Zeke Pyle.

Charlie Frankel put Delaware Valley back in the match by dropping Sean Kempf in 2:25 of their 125-pound match. Frankel trailed 4-0 and was nearly pinned, but he notched a reversal and then got the pin to make it a 9-6 contest.

The Aggies then took a 12-9 lead with decisions at 133 and 141 pounds. At 133, Zac Haynes notched four points in the second period, en route to a 4-1 triumph over Justin Hyde. Returning All-American Matt Ulrich then added an 8-6 victory over Brian Bistis.

Cortland regained the lead at 13-12 as Andre Berry picked up a 12-3 major decision over Emmanuel Ajagbe at 149 pounds. Harrington then won his match at 157 for another Aggie lead before Conroy's heroics at 165 proved to be the difference for the Red Dragons.
