DOYLESTOWN (PA) –
Steve Cantrell notched his first win as head coach as Delaware Valley College picked up points in the first eight weight classes, en route to a 42-9 triumph over visiting King's College.
Cantrell, a former Division I assistant at the United States Naval Academy, took over the Aggie program in October. The win improved Delaware Valley to 1-2 in dual meets while the Monarchs, who had to forfeit three weights due to injuries, fell to 1-3.
After
Charlie Frankel (5-4) was awarded a forfeit victory at 125 pounds,
Eric McCann (7-4) dominated his match at 133 with Travis Boardman. He registered 10 takedowns and one escape to build a 21-8 lead before pinning Boardman with 11 seconds left in the match (6:49).
Sam Pietrantuono (2-2) and returning All-American
Zak Andrews (12-2) then received forfeits at 141 and 149 pounds respectively for a 24-0 Delaware Valley advantage.
The Aggies then used a technical fall and a major decision in the next two weights to build the lead to 33-0. 2010 national qualifier
Emmanuel Ajagbe improved to 4-1 on the year as four takedowns and two near falls led to a 17-1 victory over Gordon Custer at 157 pounds. Freshman
Alec Horan followed with a 10-0 blanking of Zach Grey at 165 pounds for his fourth win in 10 matches this year.
The nailbiter of the night occurred at 174 pounds as Delaware Valley's
Connor Gabriel battled King's Shane Stark. Gabriel led 3-2 after the first period, but Stark answered with two points in the second for a 4-3 advantage. Gabriel tied it up with an escape early in the third and the match headed to overtime. Gabriel (4-5) was able to notch a takedown at the edge of the mat 36 seconds into the extra session for the 6-4 decision and a 36-0 team score.
The 184-pound match was tied at 4-4 in the second period when the Monarchs' David Foley suffered an injury and was unable to continue.
Kyle Tufts (3-4) was awarded the win.
King's avoided the shutout by capturing the final two bouts of the night. At 197, returning All-American and national qualifier Mike Reilly improved to 12-1 on the year as he pinned
Joseph Richard with 10 seconds left in the first period (2:50). Then at heavyweight, a takedown with 18 seconds remaining was the difference as Peter Dwyer (6-2) notched a 3-1 decision over the Aggies'
Zeke Pyle.
