DELVAL WINS TWO OF FOUR AT GATOR DUALS

NEW ORLEANS (LA) – Delaware Valley College competed at the Gator Duals for the first time in program history and posted a 2-2 mark with wins over Loras College (25-16) and Morningside College (29-19) and setbacks to No. 10 Elmhurst College (23-21) and No. 11 Luther College (24-17).

The Aggies, who fundraised for the trip down South, moved its dual-meet record to 3-6 on the season. They were without the services of returning All-American and third-ranked Zak Andrews (149), who rested an injury he sustained last week. That proved to be a big difference in the losses to the nationally-ranked squads as Delaware Valley gave up a combined 11 points in that weight class.

Nationally-ranked wrestlers Emmanuel Ajagbe (157) and Cody Gardner (heavyweight) went undefeated on Sunday as did freshman Henry Stinson (141). Ajagbe, ranked seventh in his weight class, was 4-0 while Gardner, ranked ninth, was 3-0. Stinson won all four of his matches.

Delaware Valley held a 15-8 lead against Elmhurst after five weight classes as Stinson and Charlie Frankel (125) had pins and Ajagbe earned a decision. However, Elmhurst notched 15 points over the next four weights with a pin and three decisions. Gardner finished off the match by pinning Brian Brooks.

The Aggies bounced back with consecutive wins. In the Loras match, a Stinson pin, an Ajagbe major decision and decisions by Frankel and Connor Gabriel (174) accounted for Delaware Valley's first 16 points. However, the match was even after eight weights. Kyle Tufts earned a 6-4 overtime decision at 197 for a 19-16 Aggie lead. Gardner then sealed the match by dropping Kyle Henry in 92 seconds for the 25-16 final.

Delaware Valley then won five of the first six weights, en route to the triumph over NAIA program Morningside. Frankel, Stinson, Ajagbe and Donald Smith (165) pinned their foes while nationally-ranked Eric Mann (10th at 133) earned a second-period technical fall.

In the final contest of the day, the Aggies led Luther by scores of 6-4 and 10-9. However, Luther registered bonus points in three of the final five weights with a pin, a technical fall and a major decision. Ajabe had a major decision for Delaware Valley while McCann, Stinson, Tufts and Gardner were awarded decisions.

The Aggies are off until January 7 when they will compete at the North/South Duals at Ursinus College.
