AGGIES ELIMINATED FROM NATIONAL DUALS FOLLOWING 1-2 SHOWING

CEDAR RAPIDS (IA) – The Delaware Valley College team, ranked 25th nationally, posted a 1-2 record and was eliminated from competition after day one of the 2011 NWCA/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals. The Aggies dropped decisions to No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse (30-12) and No. 3 Saint John's University (23-18) with a 24-18 win over 22nd-ranked Elmhurst College sandwiched in-between.

It is the first time since the 2005-06 season that Delaware Valley failed to place at the prestigious event that features 16 of the top teams in the country. The Aggies are now 4-4-1 in dual meets and they will return to action on Saturday, January 15 when they travel to Stevens Institute of Technology for a tri-match that also includes Bridgewater State University.

Delaware Valley and Wisconsin-LaCrosse met for the first time since last year's National Duals when the 12th-ranked Aggies registered a 22-15 upset of the No. 1 Eagles in the second round. Wisconsin-LaCrosse earned its revenge as it captured seven of the 10 weight classes, including a pin, a default and three major decisions.

Delaware Valley's lone wins came from nationally-ranked wrestlers Jesse Harrington (157 pounds) and Aaron Karns (197 pounds) and heavyweight transfer Cody Gardner. Harrington, ranked second in his weight class notched a 3-2 decision over Ryan Farwell while Karns, ranked eighth, picked up an 8-5 victory over John Poppie. Gardner, a sophomore transfer from Ohio State University, hit the mats for the first time in 2010-11 and pinned William Mayer in just 93 seconds.

The Aggies followed with wins in six weight classes to defeat Elmhurst in the consolation bracket. Harrington (22-6 technical fall) and Karns (2-0) combined for eight points for the team while Dale Fava added six points thanks to a pin in 2:30 over Yousef Al-Ghoul at 165 pounds. Zak Andrews earned a major decision at 141 while Charlie Frankel and Emmanuel Ajagbe won by decision at 125 and 149 pounds respectively.

The match with Saint John's saw each squad win five weight classes, but the Johnnies picked up bonus points with two pins and two major decisions compared to just one fall by Delaware Valley. The Aggies did have win over a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers as Matt Ulrich posted a 7-3 decision over No. 5 Chris Sandy at 157 pounds while Karns won his third match of the day and improved to 19-1 on the season with a 9-5 triumph over 10th-ranked Tony Willaert.

Frankel pinned Scott Padmos in 1:42 to earn the bonus points for Delaware Valley. Harrington won his third match of the day thanks to an 11-5 decision over John Vaith while Gardney added a 10-3 decision over John Linn.
