HACKETTSTOWN (NJ) – In a battle of top 25 teams, No. 11 Centenary College won eight of 10 weight classes en route to a 32-12 home triumph over 23rd-ranked Delaware Valley College. The Aggies also had some of their wrestlers at the Messiah College Open in Grantham, Pennsylvania (team scoring was not kept at the event).
The Cyclones (8-1) jumped out to a 12-0 lead thanks to two decisions and a medical forfeit in the first three weight classes (the match began at 184 pounds). However, Delaware Valley (6-5-1) cut that in half as
Charlie Frankel received a win by medical forfeit at 125 pounds.
Centenary made it 21-6 as nationally-ranked wrestlers Will Livingston (No. 1 at 133) and Dave Alsieux (No. 5 at 141) picked up wins by fall and decision respectively. The Aggies' Zak Andrew tallied six points for his team as the 149-pounder pinned ninth-ranked Jon Stillo 51 seconds into the second period (3:51).
However, the Cyclones put the match away with wins over three Delaware Valley wrestlers who were national qualifiers last year (two Aggies were wrestling up a weight class on Saturday). Owen Vernon opened with a 17-0 technical fall over
Emmanuel Ajagbe at 157 pounds and Matt Regan followed with an 8-3 upset over returning All-American and top-ranked (at 157)
Jesse Harrington at 165 pounds. Charles Cannella ended the afternoon with an 8-2 triumph over
Dan Daddino at 174 pounds.
At Messiah, two Aggies placed in heavyweight
Zeke Pyle (third) and 149-pounder
Joe Slane (sixth).
