AGGIES SWEEP TRI-MATCH AT STEVENS

HOBOKEN (NJ) – Delaware Valley College, ranked 23rd in Division III, improved its dual meet record to 6-4-1 on the season by sweeping a pair of matches at Stevens Institute of Technology. The Aggies opened with a 28-12 victory over Bridgewater State University and followed with a 25-18 triumph over the host school.

The Bridgewater State match saw Delaware Valley win six of the 10 weight classes, earning bonus points in all six. Down 3-0, Zac Haynes gave the Aggies the lead for good by pinning Dan Palmer with 39 seconds left in the first period (2:21) at 133 pounds. Matt Ulrich followed with a 10-2 major decision at 141 and Zak Andrews pinned Sean Fields at 149 pounds. Top-ranked Jesse Harrington then added a 16-8 major decision over Steven Ciaccio for a 20-3 Delaware Valley advantage.

Bridgewater State notched decisions in the next three weight classes to make it a 20-12 match, but nationally-ranked wrestlers Aaron Karns and Cody Gardner sealed the win for the Aggies with a pair of major decisions. Karns, ranked eighth in Division III at 197 pounds, earned an 8-0 win over Andrew Frazer while Gardner, ranked sixth at heavyweight, compiled a 10-1 victory over Ricky Caruso.

In the Stevens match, the host Ducks took a 6-0 lead thanks to a pin by Brandon Ling at 125. However, Haynes (decision), Ulrich (major decision), Andrews (decision) and Harrington (decision) came through for the Aggies once again and gave the team a 13-6 advantage.

Stevens regained the lead at 18-13 thanks to a forfeit at 165 and a pin by Ryan Dormann at 174. However, Jake Phillips ended the run with a 5-3 decision over Jason Nowakoski at 184 pounds to pull Delaware Valley to within two at 18-16.

Karns won his 21st match in 22 tries as the freshman notched a 6-1 decision over Vincent Termini. That gave the Aggies a 19-18 lead and leaving the entire match in the hands of the heavyweights – the second straight season for the Delaware Valley-Stevens match-up. Just like last year, the Aggies picked up a pin to win the match as Gardner dropped Brian Schmalz in just 88 seconds.
