ST. DAVIDS (PA) – Delaware Valley College wrapped up the number three seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference playoffs as the Aggies rallied for a 70-67 victory at Eastern University.
Delaware Valley, which went 11-14 overall and 5-11 in conference action just a season ago, finished the 2009-10 season with a 17-8 overall record and a 9-5 mark in the Freedom. The Aggies will head to the second seed and two-time defending conference champion DeSales University for the Freedom semifinals on Wednesday, February 24 (6:00 p.m.). The other semifinal match-up will feature top-seeded Manhattanville College and fourth-seeded Misericordia University. Wednesday's winners will advance to the Freedom Conference Championship Game at the highest remaining seed on Saturday, February 27 with that victory earning an automatic berth to the Division III playoffs.
Delaware Valley trailed the Eagles (7-17, 1-13), 59-55 with 4:22 remaining when it scored six of the next eight points to tie things up with 2:41 to go. Eastern went back up one on a free throw by Joelle DeCarlo at the two-minute mark, but Aggie senior
Kim Vennera drove to the basket and scored while being fouled just 17 seconds later. She hit the free throw, but Eastern came back with a basket with 48 seconds to go for a 65-64 score. Delaware Valley came back downcourt and, with the shot clock winding down,
Brittany Battinieri drilled a 3-pointer to ice the game. It was her lone field goal of the game after missing her first seven shots.
Vennera finished with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists and, in the process, became just the fifth player in school history to surpass the 1,400-point plateau (1,401) for a career. Freshman
Emily Soper had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds while
Jackie Shunkwiler just missed out on a double-double of her own as she had 10 points and nine boards.
DeCarlo had a game-high 22 points for Eastern while Jeriah Garton added 14 points.
