BINGHAMTON (NY) - The Delaware Valley College wrestling team, ranked seventh in Division III, opened its 2009-10 season by competing at the Bearcat Open held at Division I Binghamton University. Team scoring did not take place at the event which featured more than 300 wrestlers from 20-plus schools.
Four Aggies finished in the top six of their weight classes as
Martin Porter took fourth at 197 pounds while
Eric McCann,
Zak Andrews and
Dan Daddino placed sixth at 133, 141 and 174 pounds respectively.
Porter, a senior, reached the semifinals thanks to an 8-0 major decision over Rich Perry of Bloomsburg and a 4-2 triumph over Larry Otsuka of Brown. He dropped an 8-0 major decision to Micah Burak of Penn and was then pinned in the consolation finals by Brandon Palik (unattached).
McCann opened the tournament with a pin before falling into the consolation bracket. The junior bounced back with four consecutive victories and eventually took the sixth spot.
Andrews' weight class was the largest as it featured 38 competitors. The sophomore lost his opening match, but came back with six straight victories in the consolations, including five by pin. He wound up in the fifth/sixth place match and dropped a 14-7 decision to Zach Kemmerer of Penn.
Daddino, a transfer from Nassau Community College where he was a junior college All-American, won five of his six matches on Sunday. He eventually reached the placement match and dropped a 4-2, overtime decision to Austin Myers (unattached).
Delaware Valley will head to the East Stroudsburg University Open next Saturday, November 21. The Aggies will then have their home opener on Tuesday, November 24 when both Elizabethtown College and Division II Kutztown University come to Doylestown for a tri-match.
