CEDAR RAPIDS (IA) – Delaware Valley College's dream season continued on Friday evening as the third-ranked Aggies blanked No. 19 Luther College, 52-0, and then rallied from an early deficit to defeat fourth-ranked and host Coe College, 26-15.
Delaware Valley improved to 18-1-1 on the season, including victories number nine and ten over nationally-ranked squads this season (nine Division III teams and one Division II squad). The Aggies trip through Iowa will continue on Saturday night (7:30 p.m. CST) when they will the home mat of defending national champion and second-ranked Wartburg College.
The Coe match lived up to its hype as a jam-packed crowd urged on the home team as they looked for revenge for a 22-15 loss to Delaware Valley in the consolation finals of the Division III National Duals just 19 days ago.
The opening two weight classes of the evening featured battles between nationally-ranked wrestlers and they both went the Kohawks way, including a pin, for a 9-0 lead. Second-ranked Clayton Rush got it started with a 6-3 decision over fourth-ranked Chris Sheetz at 125 pounds. At 133, seventh-ranked Brandon Ball was ahead of the Aggies' Brandon Clemmer (ranked sixth) and then closed the deal by being awarded the fall with just one second remaining.
Delaware Valley head coach Brandon Totten elected to go with 141-pound freshman backup Zak Andrews instead of Eric McCann against 10th-ranked Johny Siegel. McCann lost to Siegel at the National Duals and Totten went with a gut feeling that Andrews was the better match-up for the evening. The decision paid off as Andrews dropped his foe in just 1:48 for a big six points and a 9-6 deficit.
Dale Fava then gave the Aggies the lead for good as he pinned Tyle Baker with 43 seconds left in the first period (2:13) of their 149-pound battle for a 12-9 advantage. Robbie Hickman then extended that to 15-9 with a 7-4 triumph over Seth Pugh at 157. Coe's Tyler Burkle made it a three-point match as the third-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds earned a 7-3 decision over Justin Barowski.
However, Delaware Valley was throwing three nationally-ranked wrestlers out onto the mat over the final four weight classes and the three were all victorious to seal the win. Rocky Mantella, ranked fifth at 174, remained undefeated at 20-0 with a 13-6 decision over Bryon Grothus. Mike Wilcox followed at 184 and last year's national runner-up and current number two wrestler recorded a 17-2 technical fall victory over Greg Lalla for a 23-12 Aggie lead.
Rob Kramer earned the final points for Coe at 197 as the seventh-ranked wrestler defeated Jeff Siciliano, 8-3. However, the decision only made it 23-15 and the Kohawks could not catch Delaware Valley on the scoreboard. The Aggies' Kyle Bilquist then added the exclamation point as the second-ranked heavyweight earned a 4-2 decision over No. 5 Mitch Sander.
Earlier in the evening, Delaware Valley used five pins, two forfeits, one major decision and two decisions to earn the 52-0 shutout over Luther. It was the second time this season that the Aggies did not allow a point to a nationally-ranked team and they notched a 46-0 blanking over No. 27 Messiah College on January 21
Sheetz (1:26), Clemmer (2:16), Fava (2:10), Hickman (2:09) and Wilcox (1:08) all registered their falls in the first period while Mantella and Martin Porter (197) received victories by forfeit. McCann earned a 13-5 major decision over Logan Queck and Barowski had a 7-3 triumph over Lance Serbousek. Bilquist had the biggest win of the match as he paired up with eighth-ranked Ally Plattner and came away with a 6-3 decision.
