DOYLESTOWN (PA) – It was a pin fest for the Delaware Valley College wrestling team as the third-ranked Aggies registered seven falls, en route to a 52-0 victory over visiting McDaniel College.
The win improved Delaware Valley to 11-1-1 on the season and it was also the 99th victory in the head coach career of Brandon Totten. Totten, a two-time national champion and 1996 graduate of Delaware Valley, boasts a 99-28-1 record in his six-plus years at the helm of the program. He will look to reach the 100-win milestone on Saturday when the Aggies travel to Stevens Institute of Technology for a tri-match that also includes King's College. The Green Terror fell to 5-9 on the year.
Four of the pins came in the opening four weight classes of the match, including nationally-ranked wrestlers
Chris Sheetz and
Brandon Clemmer. Sheetz, a returning All-American who is fourth at 125 pounds, dropped Zach Morris just 32 seconds into the second period (3:32) for his team-best 23rd win (23-3) of the season. Clemmer, who is ninth at 133 pounds, pinned Tim Hall in 1:45 to up his mark to 16-5 and give the Aggies a 12-0 advantage.
Eric McCann (12-7) made it 18-0 as he had a 16-6 lead before pinning Sean McGarry in 3:25 of their 141-pound match.
Dale Fava (6-4) ended the early run of falls as he needed just 30 seconds to pin Tom Boehm to the mat.
At 157,
Robbie Hickman (8-7) earned a late takedown to register a major decision, 10-2, over Matt Peters.
Justin Barowski (14-5) followed at 165 pounds and, with the match tied at 2-2, held Zach Hetrick for the entire two-minute third period to earn onepoint for riding time and the victory. Those triumphs increased the Delaware Valley lead to 37-0.
The Aggies then started a new run of pins as nationally-ranked wrestlers
Rocky Mantella and
Mike Wilcox earned falls at 174 and 184 pounds respectively and
Martin Porter followed with a pin of his own at 197 pounds.
Mantella, ranked fifth in his weight class, ran his record to a perfect 13-0 as he stopped Courtney Nightengale in 86 seconds. Wilcox, last year's national runner-up who is currently ranked second, won for the 19th time in 20 matches as he built a 13-5 lead before pinning Ryan Deiter in 5:49. Porter was ahead 8-4 in the second period when he dropped William Yeo in 4:35 to improve to 12-5 on the season.
The match ended with the most anticipated battle of the evening as McDaniel's Brock Gloutfelty brought his 23-0 record and number 10 ranking into the gym to face returning All-American and third-ranked Kyle Bilqust (13-3) at heavyweight.
Bilquist notched an early takedown, but Gloutfelty escaped and then earned another escape after he chose the down position to start the second period. The match remained tied at 2-2 when Bilquist, in the down position, escaped 13 seconds into the period for a 3-2 advantage. Bilquist then registered a takedown with 23 seconds remaining and earned another point for riding time for a 6-3 decision and a 52-0 team score.
