YORK (PA) – Delaware Valley College, ranked third in Division III, crowned five individual champions and took top team honors at the York College Spartan Invitational.
The Aggies racked up 108.5 points to lead the 10-team field that included a pair of Division I squads (Delaware State and Liberty) and three nationally-ranked Division III teams (No. 15 The College of New Jersey, No. 22 York and No. 30 Heidelburg). The College of New Jersey was second with 95 points whole Heidelburg and York followed with 60 and 59.5 points respectively.
Nationally-ranked wrestlers
Chris Sheetz (fourth at 125),
Brandon Clemmer (fifth at 133) and
Mike Wilcox (second at 197) captured individual titles in their weight classes as did freshman
Zak Andrews (141) and sophomore transfer
Jeff Siciliano (197).
Sheetz used a fall and two decisions to reach the finals and meet 10th-ranked Tyler Erdman of Elizabethtown for the second time in 10 days. Sheetz, who dropped a 7-4 decision in the first meeting, avenged that loss with an 8-3 triumph and improved to 13-2 on the year.
Clemmer was the top seed at the invitational and pinned his two opponents. He then blanked Division I Cameron Hurd of Liberty in the semifinals and took the crown with a 9-5 decision over 10th-ranked Kyle Flikinger of York. Clemmer is now 7-3 on the year.
Wilcox, last year's Division III runner-up, improved his record to 8-1 thanks to a technical fall, pin and a major decision at the invitational. The major decision was a 20-6 triumph over
Chris Elliott of York in the finals.
Andrews was seeded sixth at the invitational, but went 4-0 to take top honors in his weight class. He knocked off the second (Anthony Rizzolo of The College of New Jersey) and third (Justin Bowser of UMBC) to reach the finals. There he met teammate
Matt Lindsay, who was unseeded but won four matches including one over the top seed (Eric Rhoads of Elizabethtown) to reach the finals. Andrews posted a 6-3 decision over Lindsay to improve to 10-4. Lindsay moved his mark to 6-3.
Siciliano was seeded fifth and beat the number one (George Saliba of York) and four (Adam Kozial of The College of New Jersey) seeds of the invitational to reach the finals. Siciliano then notched a 6-2 decision over second-seeded James Kaughlin of York to improve to 8-4 on the season.
Justin Barowski also placed in the top four at the invitational as the senior transfer went 4-1 to finish third at 174 pounds. He is now 6-3 on the year.
