DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley University wrestling team opened the 2017-18 season with a pair of victories at a home tri-match on Wednesday evening. The Aggies downed Pennsylvania College of Technology, 38-9, and followed with a 41-9 triumph over Rowan College at Gloucester County.
It was the first wins for new DelVal head coach
Jim Wertman as the Aggies racked up a combined one pin, two technical falls, three major decisions and three decision. They also received three forfeits from Penn College and four from Rowan College at Gloucester County.
In the opening match against Penn College, forfeits in the first two weights to
Parker Velez and
Brenden Velez gave DelVal a 12-0 lead. Returning national qualifier and seventh-ranked
Tim Ambacher then opened his senior season with a 5-1 decision over Christian Fox at 141 pounds.
At 149,
Rob Duxbury trailed 4-1 before taking the top position to start the second period. He quickly turned Joseph Swank on his back for a four-point near fall and a 5-4 lead. Riding time at the end gave Duxbury a 6-4 victory. Then at 157,
Anthony Snyder had four, four-point near falls, en route to a 19-0 technical fall win over Zach Fitzsimmons for a 23-0 Aggie advantage
The Wildcats got six points at 165 when Daniel Bergeron pinned
Anthony Snyder late in the second period. However, the Aggies notched 15 points over the next three weights for a 38-6 lead.
Eliias Vega began the run with a 17-1, technical fall triumph over Jacob Canfield at 174.
David Furmato got a forfeit at 184 and transfer
Xavier Ferrizzi won his first match as an Aggie thanks to a 12-0 blanking of Patrick Ostrowsky at 197. Penn College's final points came in a 4-2 decision by Dylan Otis over
Oscar Daniels at heavyweight.
DelVal then faced Rowan College at Gloucester County, which is coached by former DelVal national champion Mike Wilcox.
Parker Velez picked up another forfeit and
Kordell Rush followed with an 8-0 blanking over Jose Santiago at 133.
Each team had a forfeit over the next two weights with Ambacher picked up a win for the Aggies. Phillips had another strong match as he jumped out to a 6-0 lead, en route to a 7-1 decision over Anthony Pencook.
The Roadrunners got three points at 165 with a 12-8 decision by Dylan Skidmore over
Chris Richardson. However, DelVal had 21 points over the final four weights for the 41-9 score. Freshman
Anthony Costanza notched his first collegiate win with a 9-0 major decision over Connor Dixon at 174. Furmato and Ferrizzi were awarded forfeits victories and Daniels bounced back from his earlier loss and pinned Steve Dinapoli in 71 seconds for the freshman's first collegiate win.
The Aggies will head to Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, November 4 for three matches at the United States Naval Academy Blue/Gold Duals.
