DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley won the final four weight classes of the evening, capped by
Zac Haynes' technical fall clincher at 133 pounds, as the eighth-ranked Aggies rallied from 12-3 and 15-6 deficits to defeat No. 28 SUNY Cortland, 21-15.
Delaware Valley, which was wrestling its first home match of the season, improved to 9-2 in dual meets and the squad will be right back in action at noon on Saturday when it hosts 10
th-ranked Ithaca College. Cortland fell to 7-3 on the year.
The match began at 141 pounds and it was the Red Dragons who held a 15-6 advantage after the first six weights. The next bout was supposed to be the match of the evening as second-ranked
Aaron Karns of Delaware Valley and third-ranked Joe Giaramita of Cortland were to resume their rivalry. But Giaramita was out for the match and Karns, instead, took on Nick Bellanza (9-6). Karns led 5-0 after one, 8-0 after two and cruised to an 11-0, major decision to improve to 22-3 and pull the Aggies to within five at 15-10.
The next nationally-ranked battle did take place as the Aggies'
Zach Roseberry (22-3), ranked fourth at heavyweight, took on 10
th-ranked Lance Moore (20-4). After a scoreless first period, Moore picked up an early escape in the second. However, Roseberry got a takedown with one second left in the period to take the lead. Roseberry escaped in the third and added a late takedown for a 5-1 decision and a 15-13 team score.
Ninth-ranked
Connor Kirkegard hit the mat next for Delaware Valley as the 125-pounder took on Matt Bradice (7-7). Kirkegard took a 3-0 lead into the third period before Bradice escaped. Bradice then got a takedown with six seconds to go, but Kirkegard had already racked up more than one minute of riding time for the 4-3 win, a 19-6 record on the season and the first Aggie lead of the night at 16-15.
So it all boiled down to 133 pounds where Haynes (19-5) met Paul Fields (10-15). Haynes dominated from the start as the senior got a takedown 15 seconds in. He nearly had pins twice in the first and built an 8-0 lead. Haynes took the bottom in the second and almost got a pin twice again for a 14-0 lead. He ended the match with a two-point near fall with four seconds left in the second for a 16-0, technical fall win and a 21-15 team triumph.
It was Cortland to start the night as the Red Dragons won four of the first six matches, including one pin, for the 15-6 lead. At 141, Tony Batista (8-10) was nearly pinned by Delaware Valley's Joshua DiSanto (8-11) in the opening period, but he bounced back for a 9-5 decision.
The Aggies tied it up at 149 as top-ranked
Vinny Fava used a takedown with 11 seconds left to earn an 8-6 decision over Greg Chery (17-17) and improved to 17-2 on the year. Cortland then took a 12-3 lead with wins in the next weights, starting with Mike Beckwith's (8-6) 39-second pin over Jeff Remiel (8-6) at 157 pounds. Colin Barber (29-10) followed with a late takedown and a 3-1 victory over
Alec Horan (12-5) at 165.
Delaware Valley got three points back at 174 as
Ben Schweiger led throughout and posted a 10-4 decision over Gino Gioielli (11-14) to up his mark to 18-4. The Red Dragons then got a 4-0 blanking by fourth-ranked Tyler Beckwith (19-3) over
Connor Gabriel (16-9) at 184. However, that was Cortland's last win of the night as the Aggies rallied for the win.
