DOYLESTOWN (PA) – New head coach
Duke Greco and the Delaware Valley College football team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2014 season, including the first home night game in school history.
Greco, a former all-conference quarterback and 2003 graduate of Delaware Valley was promoted to head coach of his alma mater in March after an 11-year stint as an assistant coach, including the last eight as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
Greco will make his head coaching debut on Saturday, September 6 when the Aggies travel to Montclair State University (Montclair, NJ) for the team's only non-conference game of the season. Delaware Valley and the Red Hawks have not met on the gridiron since 2000 when the Aggies dropped a 14-13, double-overtime decision.
Delaware Valley will then have an early bye week before hitting the grind of nine straight Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contests. And the first will be a history-making affair for the Aggies as they will host Wilkes University under the new lights at Robert A. Lipinski Field at James Work Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 20. The first home night game – which will also be the annual Hall of Fame Game (induction ceremony at halftime) - will start at 7:00 p.m. and it will be under a Colonels' squad that went 4-6 last season.
The first conference road game will follow the next Saturday, September 27 when Delaware Valley heads to Annville, Pennsylvania to battle defending MAC champion Lebanon Valley College. The Flying Dutchmen went 8-3 overall a season ago, including a 34-31 overtime decision against the Aggies.
Delaware Valley will then have back-to-back home games on the first two Saturdays in October against teams that went a combined 15-6 last season. First on October 4, the Aggies will host Albright College, which is coming off an 8-3 campaign and an ECAC Southwest Bowl title. One of those three losses was a 20-17 decision to Delaware Valley as
Brandon Snyder booted a 25-yard field goal with no time remaining.
The Aggies will then welcome Lycoming College to town for Homecoming and Family Day on Saturday, October 11 (an early 12:00 p.m. start). The Warriors went 7-3 overall last year and were co-conference champions with Lebanon Valley. Delaware Valley and Lycoming have seen each of its three match-ups decided by 10 points or less.
The Aggies will board a bus for two of their next three games, beginning with an overnight trip to Maryland to battle Stevenson University on October 18. The Mustangs went 4-6 last season. Delaware Valley will then host third-year program Misericordia University, which notched its first win in school history as part of a 1-9 campaign in 2013, on October 25. Then it's off to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on November 1 and a meeting with a resurgent King's College squad. The Monarchs had a four-game improvement last year with a 6-4 mark.
Delaware Valley's final home game and Senior Day will take place on Saturday, November 8 when it battles FDU-Florham, which went 1-9 a season ago. The Aggies will then conclude the regular season in Chester, Pennsylvania on November 15 against archrival Widener University. As always, the Keystone Cup will be on the line and Delaware Valley had possession of it thanks to last year's 50-28 rout of the Pride, who went 6-4 on the year. Widener has a new coach in Mike Kelly.
Delaware Valley is coming off a 2013 campaign that saw the Aggies notch a 7-4 overall record and a 6-3 mark in the Middle Atlantic Conference. It was their school record-tying sixth consecutive winning season and 10
th in the last 11 years. Delaware Valley was also selected to the postseason for a fifth consecutive year and for the 10
th time in the last 11 seasons and it dropped a home decision to Franklin & Marshall College in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southeast Bowl.
Greco is expecting 14 starters back from last year's squad with six on the offensive side, seven on the defensive side and one kicker. Among the starters is senior quarterback and three-time all-MAC honoree
Aaron Wilmer.
