ELIZABETHTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College senior sprinter
Travis Pitts successfully defended his 100-meter and 200-meter dash titles at the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championships and was named the conference's Male Track Athlete of the Year for a second year in a row. As a team, the Aggies were tied for eighth out of 10 squads.
Pitts earned 20 of his team's 26 points and made school history along the way. His time of 21.82 seconds in the 200-meter dash broke the previous Delaware Valley of 22.04 seconds set by Edson Barrett back in 1985. That now gives him both the 100 and 200-meter school records and he shattered the 100-meter mark last season.
Pitts opened Saturday by taking the 100-meter crown with a time of 10.92 seconds, 0.17 seconds faster than runner-up Eddie Burgess of Widener. It was not only the All-American's second straight 100-meter crown, but his third in four years. The only year Pitts didn't take the MAC title was as a sophomore in 2010 when he battled through an injury and placed eighth.
The remaining six points came from fellow senior and All-American
Tom Masterson. Masterson was the two-time defending champion in both the javelin and the long jump, but entered the championship off an injury. He only competed in the javelin at the MACs and took third place with a throw of 185 feet, 2 inches.
Widener University cruised to the conference title as its 250.5 points was 101.5 points more than runner-up Messiah College.
