DOYLESTOWN (PA) – On Senior Night, four Delaware Valley College seniors combined for all 22 points with three pins and a major decision as the host Aggies edged Division II East Stroudsburg University, 22-21.
The win improved Delaware Valley to 9-11 in dual meets while the Warriors fell to 5-12.
Nine Aggie seniors were recognized before the match with six in Friday's lineup. One of them was
Charlie Frankel as the 125-pounder kicked things off by notching an early takedown and then pinning Zach Jones (8-14) in just 47 seconds. The win improved Frankel to 18-8 on the season.
Fellow senior
Eric McCann followed at 133 pounds and he registered six takedowns, en route to a 14-6 major decision over Chris Davis (5-20). For McCann it was his 18th triumph in 26 matches and it gave Delaware Valley a 10-0 lead.
East Stroudsburg cut that in half at 141 as Adam Hluschak, ranked third regionally in Division II, improved to 24-2 with a 17-1, technical fall victory over
James DeLillo (14-14).
Returning All-American
Zak Andrews hit the mat for the Aggies and the second-ranked 149-pound wrestler in Division III, found himself in a 2-2 tie with Andrew Ritchie (11-13) after the first period. Andrews chose the down position to start the second and, 25 seconds later, he reversed and pinned Ritchie in one swoop for a 16-5 Delaware Valley lead. Andrews upped his record to 24-2 on the season and he also moved into sole possession of fourth place on the Delaware Valley all-time list with 110 victories (63 pins).
East Stroudsburg, behind a pair of regionally-ranked wrestlers, picked up decisions in the next weights, to make it a 16-11 score. At 157, Braden Turner (20-11), ranked sixth, earned a 4-2 decision over
Emmanuel Ajagbe (15-5), who was inside of Turner in the final seconds, but could not get the tying takedown. At 165, Delaware Valley senior
Donald Smith (14-14) battled sixth-ranked Thad Frick (20-6) to a one-point decision, but fell 7-6.
Brendan McKeown (6-5) made it a one-point match as he picked up a 13-0 major decision over the Aggies'
Alec Horan (6-13) at 174 pounds. However, Delaware Valley got six points back at 184 as senior
Kyle Tufts dropped Will Esposito (1-11) with 39 seconds left in the first period. The win improved Tufts to 12-11 on the year.
Thee 197-pound battle featured Delaware Valley senior
Chris James taking on Ed Ebewo, who entered the night ranked first in the region and seventh nationally. For James, who joined the team for the first time this year after a standout football career, it was just his 10th match (4-5 in the previous nine), but he did not give up any bonus points as Ebewo (13-3) picked up the 10-4 decision.
That left the team score at 22-18 and East Stroudsburg needed at least a major to win the match (criteria would have favored the Warriors for six wins on the night). Joe Blaes (4-12) notched the win for the Warriors, but it was only a 3-2 triumph over
Mike Boardman (3-7) and the Aggies came away with win.
