DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Having moved up two spots to eighth in the latest D3football.com Top 25 poll, Delaware Valley College's new ranking will be put to the test on Saturday, September 18 as the Aggies travel to Dover, Delaware to battle No. 3 Wesley College. Kickoff at Dr. Scott D. Miller Stadium for the non-conference game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
It is the fourth year in a row that the two teams will meet with Wesley holding a 2-1 edge during that time. The Wolverines hosted the Aggies in 2007 and rallied in the second half for a for a 24-21 victory. The Aggies earned a come-from-behind victory of their own a year later as they used a one-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-goal with 10.6 seconds remaining to upset the third-ranked Wolverines in Doylestown. Wesley was ranked fifth last year when it returned to Doylestown and posted a 31-13 victory.
Both teams enter this year's meeting with not only a high national ranking, but dominating performances in their first two games. Delaware Valley went on the road for its opener and notched a 27-7 victory over Muhlenberg College. The Aggies followed that with a 27-0, home dismantling of 20th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College. Wesley hit the road for its first two games and returned home with 34-6 and 47-0 routs of Christopher Newport University and Frostburg State University.
Delaware Valley dominated every aspect of the Washington & Jefferson game, especially on the defensive side of the ball where they held the Presidents to just 67 yards of total offense, including minus-11 yards rushing. The unit did not allow a first down until there was 5:42 left in the third quarter and, in fact, racked up more sacks (6) and forced more punts (8) than Washington & Jefferson final total of first downs (5). Offensively, the Aggies notched 446 yards and 27 first downs, were 10-for-16 on third-down conversions and held the ball for nearly 40 minutes (39:53).
Senior quarterback
Mark Hatty (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) was named the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Offensive Player of the Week as he completed 22 of 30 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, rushed five times for 34 yards and a score, and even caught a 10-yard pass. Hatty has now completed 66.1 percent of his passes (37-for-56) for 378 yards and three touchdowns this season.
Three-time all-conference tailback
Matt Cook (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) went over the 100-yard mark for the 17th time in his standout career as he lugged the ball 27 times for 121 yards and one touchdown against Washington & Jefferson. His trip to the end zone was the 34th (32 rushing, 2 receiving) of his career and broke the school record held by 2006 graduate Steve Cook's (no relation).
Matt Cook is also closing in on the Aggie all-time rushing record as his 3,421 yards is 109 shy of Steve Cook's mark. This season,
Matt Cook has carried the ball 43 times for 190 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior
Dan Heiland (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) leads a balance group of wideouts with nine grabs for 99 yards, including a four-reception, 44-yard showing last week. He is three catches shy of becoming the eighth player in Delaware Valley history to reach the 100-reception plateau.
Fellow senior wideout (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) saw limited time in the opener due to an injury, but bounced back in a big way last week. He hauled in four passes for 67 yards, including touchdowns of 23 and 34 yards.
The Aggie defense has permitted just seven points, 16 first downs and 270 yards of total offense over the first two games of the year. In fact, the lone score and a combined eight first downs and 106 yards have come in the last drive of each contest.
Heading the unit is senior linebacker
Kyle Gesswein (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), who was the MAC Defensive Player of the Year, the D3football.com Defensive Player of the Year and a D3footall.com first team All-American last year. He also holds the Aggie all-time record for sacks with 32.5. Gesswein is off to another terrific start in 2010 as he has notched 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks, including seven stops and 1.5 quarterback takedowns last week against Washington & Jefferson.
Junior linebackers
Ken Fowlkes (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) and
Chris James (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) have 14 and 12 tackles respectively. Fowlkes has had seven stops in each of the first two games to pace the team. James, a 2009 all-conference honoree, had five tackles and half a sack last week. He opened the year with a 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown at Muhlenberg.
All-conference lineman
Garrett Wooters (Oxford, PA/Oxford) had a strong performance against Washington & Jefferson with four tackles and a game-high two sacks. The senior has six stops on the year.
Fellow linemen
Mike Jaskowski (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and
Amadeus Hall (Camden, NJ/Camden) have three and two sacks respectively. Jaskowski, who was a starting linebacker last season, also has nine tackles to his credit this season with three stops and a sack coming against Washington & Jefferson. Hall had one sack last week while his three tackles upped his season total to 10.
WESLEY COLLEGE
The Wolverines have racked up 58 wins over the last five seasons for the third-highest total in Division III during that span (only national champions Mount Union and Wisconsin-Whitewater have more). They have reached the NCAA playoffs all five years, including semifinal appearances in 2005, 2006 and 2009.
This year's edition has outscored its opponents by an 81-6 margin with the offense averaging 443 yards per game and the defense allowing just 124 yards. Last week, it held a 482-135 margin in total offense, en route to the 47-0 win over Frostburg.
Wesley suffered a major blow in week one when senior quarterback Shane McSweeny went down with an injury early in the contest. Junior Justin Sottilare has taken over the reigns and has been impressive, completing 33 of 61 passes for 521 yards and seven touchdowns. He was 16-for-30 for 254 yards, four score and two interceptions last week.
Senior wideout Ellios Krout has been Sottilare's favorite target as he has hauled in nine passes for 125 yards and three trips to the end zone. Two of the scores occurred last week at Frostburg State as he finished the day with five receptions for 87 yards.
All-American tight end Sean McAndrew also caught a touchdown pass last week, one of two catches on the afternoon. The senior has five receptions for 57 yards and two scores this season.
The Wolverine ground attack is paced by sophomore Brandon Wright. Wright has carried the ball 26 times for 218 yards (8.4 avg) and four touchdowns. He had a 74-yard touchdown run to open the scoring last week and finished the game with 12 attempts for 148 yards and a pair of scores.
On the defensive side of the ball, linebackers Mike Asiedu and Quran Barge lead the way with 14 tackles apiece. Asiedu, a junior, had seven tackles and three pass breakups at Frostburg State while Barge, a senior, made four stops.
Senior All-Americans Chris Mayes and Aaron Benson are off to strong starts as well. Mayes, an end, has notched 11 tackles and a team-best three sacks, including a five-tackle, one-sack showing a week ago. Benson, a safety, has eight stops and the team's lone interception of the season. He was credited with four tackles at Frostburg State.
