COCOA BEACH (FL) – Freshman
Greer McComas hurled a no-hitter – the second straight for the Delaware Valley College pitching staff – as the Aggies won one of three contests on a Monday full of action in Florida.
The day began at 9:00 a.m. with McComas' no-no and a 10-0 victory over Mount Mary College (WI). Delaware Valley immediately followed that with a match-up with NAIA program Valley City State University (ND) and dropped a 5-3 contest. The Aggies came back to the field later that evening and completed the tripleheader with a 12-4 setback to Rhodes College (TN). Delaware Valley is now 3-2 on the young season and has four games remaining on its Spring Break trip.
McComas made her first collegiate start a memorable one as she did not allow a single hit over the five innings played (game was halted due to the eight-run mercy rule). She walked five batters and fanned four. A day earlier,
Becky Furman and
Keri Hardiman combined for a no-hitter in a 4-2 triumph over Division II University of Minnesota-Crookston.
McComas helped her own cause with an RBI double that was part of a four-run first inning. She went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a pair of runs. Senior centerfielder Nancy Kauffman was 1-for-2 with a three-run homer in the third inning. Rookie
Katey Galbreath was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI while senior shortstop
Bethany Pavlik was 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, a run scored and an RBI.
The Valley City State contest saw the Aggies take an early 1-0 lead on a run-scoring singe by freshman
Allison Tomasino. However, the Vikings (6-3) responded with three tallies in their half of the first inning to take the lead for good. Pavlik's two-run single in the fifth made it a 4-3 contest, but Valley City State added an insurance run in the sixth and pulled out the victory. Furman took the loss on the mound.
The nightcap was tied at 3-3 when Rhodes (15-4) scored three times in the fifth and added six more in the sixth for a 12-4 victory. Rebekah Moore and Olivia Ryan had three RBIs apiece for the Lynx with Ryan's three-run double in the sixth putting the mercy rule into effect.
Martini paced the Aggie attack by going 3-for-4 with a double and two run scored.
Maggie Kichler went four-plus innings and suffered the loss.
