DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Senior heavyweight
Kyle Bilquist tied the Delaware Valley College all-time record for victories as the Aggies, ranked fifth in Division III, swept a pair of matches against Division II foes Mercyhurst College and Shippensburg University on Saturday. Delaware Valley opened with a 31-10 victory over a Mercyhurst squad that has received votes in the Division II poll, and followed with a 50-0 shutout over Shippensburg.
The Aggies are now 12-2 in dual meets, including a 4-0 mark against Division II schools. They will wrap up their regular-season campaign on Wednesday, February 10 (7:00 p.m.) when they host Centenary College for Senior Night.
Senior Night may be one to remember for Bilquist as that will be his first opportunity to set the individual record for wins (regional and national championship matches also count towards a wrestler's totals). And the mark he can break is held by his head coach, Brandon Totten, as the 1996 graduate won 122 matches (122-20) and two national titles during his wrestling days with the Aggies.
Bilquist, a two-time All-American who is currently ranked second in Division III in his weight class, moved into a first-place tie thanks to a 3-2 decision over Division II regionally-ranked Fred Hale of Merychurst and a 105-second pin of Tyler Zittle of Shippensburg. Bilquist is 23-3 on the current campaign and 122-18 in his career.
Junior
Dan Daddino also went 2-0 on the afternoon, including a 3-2 overtime triumph over Division II regionally-ranked Jon Hade of Shippensburg. That match was at 184 pounds, a weight class higher than Daddino usually competes at. His first match was at 174 pounds and he notched a 9-0 major decision over Mercyhurst's Pat Carter.
Terrance Clendenin (125),
Zac Haynes (133) and
Martin Porter (197) each went a perfect 2-0 with Porter, ranked 10th in Division III, improving his record to 26-7 this season.
Mercyhurst (5-11) opened the day's festivities with a 24-22, come-from-behind victory over Shippensburg (6-5). The Lakers trailed 15-0 after three weight classes and 22-14 with two remaining before a pin by Chris Noochi at 197 pounds and a major decision by Hale at heavyweight gave them the win.
