WESTMINSTER (MD) – Delaware Valley College won seven of 10 weight classes, including a battle of nationally-ranked wrestlers at heavyweight, as the fifth-ranked Aggies downed host McDaniel College, 31-13.
The victory improved Delaware Valley to 7-2 in dual meets. The squad will return to action at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday when it hosts Stevens Institute of Technology. McDaniel fell to 3-4 on the season.
The match was all decided by the time second-ranked
Kyle Bilquist and No. 10 Brock Glofelty hit the mats at heavyweight, but that didn't take away any of the suspense. Bilquist recorded a first-period takedown for a 2-0 lead but Glofelty escaped for a point. Glofelty took the down position in the second and escaped from Bilquist to tie the match. In the third, it was Bilquist's turn to take the down position and he got away from Glofelty's grip just 25 seconds into the period. Bilquist then held on for his ninth victory of the year in 11 matches. It was also his third win (3-0) against nationally-ranked opponents.
Delaware Valley was without four starters on Friday, including nationally-ranked wrestlers
Jesse Harrington (first at 157 pounds) and
Martin Porter (10th at 184 pounds). The Aggies forfeited the 125-pound weight class, but they came back with wins at 133 and 141 to take a 9-6 advantage.
Eric McCann earned a 6-5 decision over Tommy Goretsas while
Zak Andrews needed just 34 seconds to pin Michael Tancredi.
The Green Terror took a 10-9 lead after a major decision by Brent Lowe at 149 pounds, but Delaware Valley won the next three bouts, including a pin and a major decision, for a 22-10 advantage.
Emmanuel Ajagbe began the run with an 8-3 decision over Matt Peters at 157, and Michael Chiappeta notched a pin 55 seconds into the third period (5:55) at 165.
Dan Daddino followed with a 10-2 major decision over Scott Forrester at 174 pounds.
McDaniel's Will Yeo ended the run with a 7-0 victory at 184 pounds for the Green Terror's final points of the evening. The Aggies'
Rob Fecanin was awarded a forfeit victory at 197 to lead into the big heavyweight showdown and a Bilquist victory.
