GAME PREVIEW: AGGIES VS WESLEY

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley College football team will look to improve to 3-0 on the season, but the task won't be easy as the Aggies host No. 5 Wesley College for a non-conference game on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff at Robert A. Lipinski Field at James Work Memorial Stadium is slated for 1:00 p.m.

It marks the third straight year that the two teams will meet and the first two had exciting finishes. In 2007, Wesley rallied from a third-quarter deficit and used a touchdown in the latter stages of the fourth to squeeze out a 24-21 victory in Dover, Delaware. Last year's game took place in Doylestown where the Aggies, coming off a season-opening loss to Iona College, trailed the third-ranked Wolverines 16-0 at halftime. They rallied to take the lead, lost the advantage and then used a one-yard touchdown run by fullback Butch Whiteside (Glenolden, PA/Interboro) on fourth-and-goal with 10.6 seconds remaining to notch the 25-22 upset.

Delaware Valley upped its mark to 2-0 on the current campaign with last Saturday's 30-17 thriller at Kean University. The Aggies used a long scoring drive to take a 24-17 lead with 5:26 remaining only to see the Cougars reach the Delaware Valley 20-yard line with just over a minute remaining. However, senior cornerback Charles Squitiere (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) intercepted the next Kean pass and returned it 90 yards for a game-clinching touchdown.

The Aggies are averaging 26.5 points and 339 yards of total offense through the first two games. Senior quarterback and 2008 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Offensive Player of the Year Mike Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) heads the unit as he has completed 22 of 45 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns while also adding 65 yards on the ground. Isgro, who has started all 34 games of his collegiate career, was 10-for-20 for 133 yards and one scoring toss at Kean.

Matt Cook (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) leads the ground attack as the junior tailback has accumulated 249 yards on 56 carries in the first two contests. Cook, who led the MAC in rushing with 1,323 yards last year, lugged the ball 28 times for 151 yards against Kean and keyed the team's last two offensive scoring drives. In the process, he moved into fourth place on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,168 yards.

Senior Chad Peterman (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland) is the Aggies' leading receiver with six grabs for 84 yards and one trip to the end zone. He hauled in three passes for 19 yards last week.

Junior Dan Heiland (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) and sophomores Isaiah Hall (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) and Tyler Neal (Hershey, PA/Hershey) notched the team's offensive touchdowns against Kean. Heiland caught a 21-yard scoring pass for his lone reception of the day and he has three grabs for 48 yards on the year. Hall, a wideout, added a rushing touchdown for the second straight week. Neal, a tailback, had his first collegiate score as his three-yard scamper with 5:26 to go gave Delaware Valley the lead for good.

Freshman placekicker Jake Sobchak (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) booted a field goal for the second straight week as he opened the scoring against Kean with a 35-yard kick. He added two extra-point attempts and is a perfect 5-for-5 on the year. Sobchak is also 2-for-2 on field goals and leads the team in scoring with 12 points.

Defensively, Delaware Valley is permitting just 12 points and 283 yards per game. They held a potent Kean offense to just 277 yards, including 85 yards on 35 rushing attempts, and forced the crucial turnover that sealed the contest.

Squitiere was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week for his game-clinching play. It was his second career interception return for a touchdown and his 358 yards ranks second on the school's all-time list. The pick also upped Squitiere's career total to 12 and moved him into a tie with two others for fourth place in that category.

Sophomore linebackers Chris James (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) and Ken Fowlkes (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) had career afternoons with 15 and 10 tackles respectively at Kean. James leads the team with 24 stops in two games while Fowlkes ranks third with 16 stops.

Junior linebacker and preseason All-American Kyle Gesswein (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) has 18 tackles on the young season, including 3.5 behind the line of scrimmage. He made nine stops last week.

WESLEY COLLEGE

The Wolverines, under head coach Mike Drass, have made four straight trips to the NCAA Division III playoffs. They reached the semifinals in both 2005 and 2006 and followed with a quarterfinal appearance in '07. Last year, Wesley recovered from the loss to Delaware Valley and won its last eight games of the regular season. They then took care of Muhlenberg in the first round of the NCAAs before falling the next week to Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The Wolverines are off to a 2-0 start this year with impressive victories over then No. 20 Christopher Newport University (34-0) and Division II North Greenville University (28-3). In addition to the point differential, they are averaging 415.5 yards of total offense while allowing just 235 yards.

Junior quarterback Shane McSweeny came off the bench in last year's Delaware Valley game and started the rest of the season. This year, he has completed 27 of 54 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 104 yards and two scores. Both rushing touchdowns came against North Greenville as McSweeny finished with 72 yards on the ground and 219 yards and another score in the air.

Fellow juniors Ellis Krout and Sean McAndrew are McSweeney's favorite targets. Krout, a wideout, has eight catches for 141 yards and three trips to the end zone, including five grabs for 55 yards and one score last week. McAndrew, a tight end, has six receptions for 115 yards in the first two contests.

Senior Andrew Jackson heads the Wesley ground attack with 37 carries for 228 yards and three touchdowns, including 134 yards and one trip to the end zone last week. He rushed 14 times for exactly 100 yards and one touchdown in last year's loss to Delaware Valley.

A strong Wolverine defense features junior safeties Marcus Wilson and Aaron Benson as well as sophomore linebacker Mike Asiedu. Wilson has 14 tackles to rank second on the team. Six of those stops came against North Greenville.

Benson has 10 tackles and two interceptions to his credit. He has one pick in each game, including one that he ran back 73 yards for a touchdown in the opener against Christopher Newport. Asiedu has a team-high 15 tackles with 10 stops coming in last week's win over North Greenville.
