DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Five Delaware Valley College football players were recently named to 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Southeast All-Star Team: junior tailback
Matt Cook, junior linebacker
Kyle Gesswein, junior offensive tackle
Mike Lewis, junior offensive tackle
Mike Long and sophomore safety
Ryan McCullough.
Delaware Valley had the most players on the ECAC Southeast All-Star Team and all five had already earned all-Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) first-team accolades earlier in the offseason.
Cook carried the ball 291 times for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns while also catching 22 passes for 214 yards and one score. He went over the 100-yard rushing plateau six times and had four, multiple-touchdown performances as well.
Gesswein has brought home a stack of awards as he was the MAC and D3football.com East Region Defensive Player of the Year, and then was a first-team All-American selection by D3football.com as well. He led the Aggies in tackles (98), tackles for loss (18), sacks (11) and forced fumbles (three) while also notching four pass breakups, one interception and one blocked kick. He also became Delaware Valley's all-time leader in sacks with 30.
Lewis (6-3, 280) and Long (6-2, 270) were the bookends for an Aggie offensive line that helped the squad average 30.7 points and 382.5 yards (184.8 avg rushing, 197.7 avg passing) per game, including four, 40-plus point performances. Long also earned first-team all-East Region and honorable mention All-American honors from D3football.com.
McCullough, who was also an all-East Region selection, finished tied for the team lead in interceptions with five and was also second in pass breakups with 10 and fifth in tackles with 61. He also tallied a sack and a forced fumble on the year.
Delaware Valley finished the 2009 campaign with a 10-2 overall record and captured its second straight MAC crown (it shared the title with two teams in 2008) thanks to a perfect 7-0 league record. The Aggies advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs where they notched a 66-7 victory over Susquehanna University in the opening round before falling to Albright College in the second round.
