CEDAR FALLS (IA) – For the third consecutive year, the Delaware Valley College wrestling team has reached the semifinals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals as the third-ranked Aggies posted dominating wins over Ohio Northern University (46-0) and No. 9 Saint John's University (41-4).
The top four teams in the country all advanced to the semifinals and Delaware Valley will meet No. 2 Augsburg College (MN) at 11:00 a.m. CST on Sunday. Augsburg posted 54-0 blankings over both Buena Vista College (IA) and 21st-ranked Johnson & Wales University (RI). Defending National Duals and NCAA champion Wartburg College (IA) will meet fourth-ranked Coe College (IA) in the other semifinal match-up. The finals are slated for 3:00 p.m.
Delaware Valley (9-0-1), which has placed third at the National Duals in each of the last two seasons, had little trouble in its first matches as the Aggies lost just one of 20 individual matches on the day. They swept through the Ohio Northern contest with the closes decision being five points. That took place at heavyweight where backup
Charlie Pendlebury notched a 9-4 triumph over Joe Fisher.
Nationally-ranked wrestlers
Brandon Clemmer (10th at 133) and
Rocky Mantella (seventh at 174) recorded pins in less than a minute while
Dale Fava (149) and
Robbie Hickman (157) also had first-period falls.
Mike Wilcox, last year's runner and the current number one ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, won by technical fall as did returning All-American and nationally-ranked (fifth)
Chris Sheetz at 125 pounds.
Eric McCann (ranked 10th at 141),
Justin Barowski (165) and
Martin Porter (197) each won by decision.
The Saint John's match saw Clemmer and Wilcox go head-to-head with a fellow nationally-ranked wrestler. Clemmer edged fifth-ranked Mogi Baatar, 3-2, while Wilcox had little trouble en route to a 16-7 major decision over No. 7 Dustin Baxter.
Fava picked up his second pin of the day while Sheetz, Jeff Sicliano (197) and nationally-ranked
Kyle Bilquist (second at heavyweight) dropped their opponents as well. Mantella won by major decision while McCann and Barowski earned decisions. The Johnnies' lone points came from seventh-ranked Matt Baarson as he posted a 14-6 major decision over Hickman at 147.
