DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College junior quarterback Mike Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) has been named the 2008 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Offensive Player of the Year while five teammates joined him on the all-conference squad.
In addition to Isgro, sophomore tailback Matt Cook (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) and senior tackle Ralph Stambaugh (Westminster, MD/Francis Scott Key) were selected to the first-team offense. Sophomore linebacker Kyle Gesswein (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and junior cornerback Charles Squitiere (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) were named to the first-team defense while junior end Derek Porter (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) earned second-team accolades.
Isgro, who was a second-team selection last year, led the MAC in passing efficiency during the regular season with 137.51 rating. He has completed 134 of 243 passes this season for 1,653 yards, 21 touchdowns and just four interceptions while also rushing with 348 yards and two touchdowns on 97 carries. Isgro received weekly honors from the MAC five times this year (two Offensive Player of the Week, three Honor Roll), and moved into second place in nearly every Delaware Valley career passing category.
Cook was also a second-team, all-MAC honoree a season ago. He currently leads the MAC and is third on the school's single-season chart in both rushing yardage (1,169) and touchdowns (11) while carrying the ball 239 times. Cook has gone over the 100-yard mark six times, including a 233-yard effort in a win over Lebanon Valley College.
Stambaugh has started all 44 games of his collegiate career and picked up his second straight, first-team honor. He heads an offensive line that helped the Aggies lead the MAC in scoring (26.2 avg) and place third in total yardage (336.2 avg) during the regular season.
Gesswein picked up his first, all-conference accolade as he is tops in the conference in both sacks (10.5) and tackles for losses (21) and second in total tackles (101). He earned MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors three times and was recently named to the Honor Roll for his 10-tackle, 3.5-sack performance in the win over Albright College.
Squitiere was named to the all-conference team for the first time in his career. He has intercepted a MAC-best six passes for 118 yards while also adding 40 tackles and five pass breakups.
Porter's first year as a starter on the defense line resulted in his first all-MAC selection. He racked up 29 tackles, two pass breakups, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery during the regular season.
Delaware Valley has a 7-3 overall record and earned a share of the MAC title with Albright and Lycoming College thanks to a 5-2 mark in league play (Lycoming earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs thanks to a tiebreaker). The Aggies were selected for an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason berth and will host Kean University in the South Atlantic Bowl on Saturday, November 22.
