WAYNESBURG (PA) – Sophomore Caitlin Dorgan finished in 11th place and will now await word on a bid to the NCAA Division III Championships as the Delaware Valley College women’s and men’s cross country teams competed at the NCAA Mid-East Regionals held at Waynesburg University. The women placed 19th out of 44 teams while the men took 29th out of 43 squads.
Dorgan may become the first women’s runner in Aggie cross country history to qualify for the NCAA Championship as she finished the 6K regional course in 22 minutes, 49 seconds to top all but 10 runners in the 304-competitor field.
The top two teams in each region as well as the next seven runners automatically qualify for the NCAAs. Johns Hopkins University and Dickinson College finished one-two in the team standings and two of Johns Hopkins’ runners placed in the top seven, leaving Dorgan as the ninth runner under consideration. If third-place Messiah College and fourth-place Elizabethtown College receive team at-large berths to the NCAAs, then two more top individual runners would go with their teams. That would give Dorgan the seventh spot and a trip to nationals. The Division III field will be announced on Sunday (editor's note on Sunday: Dorgan did not get a berth to the NCAAs.).
Brittany Schwartz had a strong showing as well as she placed 60th with a time of 24 minutes, 23 seconds. Sara Brown was next in 148th place.
On the men’s side, Chip Brumbaugh was Delaware Valley’s top finisher as his 8K time of 27 minutes, 53 seconds placed him 110th out of 306 runners. Rico Borrero and Kevin McCoy were next as they finished 136th and 154th respectively.
