EAST STROUDSBURG (PA) – Sophomore 125-pounder
Chris Sheetz took top honors in his weight class to highlight Delaware Valley College's showing at the East Stroudsburg University Open.
The Open featured wrestlers from all collegiate levels of competition as well as a host of unattached wrestlers. Team scoring was not held at the event.
Sheetz, a 2008 All-American (sixth place) who is currently ranked fourth in Division III, went a perfect 5-0 to win the crown. He was seeded second and advanced to the semifinals with a 3-2 decision over Desmond Moore of Millersville, a 16-1 technical fall victory over Cory Waldorf of Kutztown and a 7-3 decision over Will Sharbaugh of Maryland. Sheetz continued his run with a 5-3 decision over Mark Rappo (unattached) and then took home the individual title with a 3-2 victory over Frank Cagnina (unattached).
Fellow nationally-ranked wrestlers
Mike Wilcox (second at 184) and
Brandon Clemmer (seventh at 133) had strong performances as well for Delaware Valley.
Wilcox, who was the national runner-up in his weight class last year, reached the Open semifinals with three wins. He dropped an 8-6 decision to eventual champion Colin Hitschler (unattached) and wound up finishing fifth Clemmer went 2-2 and reached the seventh-eight place match but the Open did not have those matches take place.
Zach Marlatt (157)
Jeff Siciliano (197) and
Charlie Pendlebury (285) also reached the seventh-eighth place matches at the Open.
