DOYLESTOWN (PA) – After battling to a scoreless tie through 110 minutes of action, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region quarterfinal match-up between third-seeded Delaware Valley and No. 6 Swarthmore College came down to penalty kicks and the Garnet advanced with a 4-3 edge.
As a result, Swarthmore (9-4-5), the defending ECAC South Region champions, will move into Saturday's semifinals against the winner of tonight's match-up between second-seeded Westminster College and seventh-seeded Catholic University (site and time also still to be determined).
The Aggies' record-breaking season came to an end with a school-record for wins (14-4-2), and their first-ever appearances in both the Freedom Conference Championship Game and the ECAC South Region Championships.
In the penalty kicks, Swarthmore goalkeeper Lauren Walker stopped the Aggies' Jessica Stahley on their first attempt. The next six opportunities found the net as Kelsey Cline, Sarah Reece and Eileen Earl connected for the Garnet and Emily Perryman, Christine Del Turco and Elise Dauber connected for Delaware Valley. Swarthmore's Megan Colombo then missed wide to end the fourth round at 2-2. The Aggies' Nicki Martini was stopped by Walker, giving Swarthmore's Julia Luongo a chance to end it. However, Delaware Valley goalkeeper Cortney Bower made a diving save to send the penalty kicks into sudden death.
The Aggies' Kelsey Krammer went first in round six and her shot just missed the top left corner and sailed over the net. The Garnet's Melinda Petre then blasted the ball into the low left corner to send her squad to the semifinals.
Swarthmore held an 11-7 advantage in shots in the first half, but most of the chances for both squads were from far range. The intensity picked up in the second stanza with the Aggies outshooting the Garnet, 11-3. Delaware Valley's had the better of the opportunities as a Dauber shot from 20 yards out was stopped by Walker with 32:37 remaining, and Martini had back-to-back shots with 19 minutes to go. Walker earned a save on one while the other sailed wide. Dauber received a lead pass with 4:20 remaining but Walker was able to stop that attempt as well.
The Aggies managed two shots to just one by Swarthmore in the first overtime and then held a 3-2 edge in the second stanza. With 6:18 to go in the second, Dauber had the ball in the box but her shot went high. Three minutes later, Colombo sent a good chance wide and then Reece had an opportunity that was blocked. Those were the last shots until time ran out and Swarthmore took care of the rest in penalty kicks.
Bower, one of seven seniors on the Delaware Valley roster, notched seven saves and is credited with a shutout in the final game of her collegiate career. Dauber, also a senior, finished her stellar four years as Delaware Valley's second all-time leader in both goals (53) and points (127), She was the 2007 Freedom Conference Player of the Year and may earn the honor again when the 2007 edition is announced later this week.
Walker stopped nine shots for Swarthmore, which notched its 11th shutout in 18 games this season.
